Motorola trying to patent smart ads in navigation apps

Motorola trying to patent smart ads in navigation apps

There are few places left in this world safe from advertising. Your apps have em, your train is plastered with them (inside and out), even your premium video subscription service pelts you with sales pitches. So, why should getting from one place to another be any different? Motorola (and, we suppose by extension, Google) doesn't see any reason it shouldn't feed you ads while you're navigating about, using your phone's turn-by-turn directions app. Of course, all these ads would be tailored specifically to your tastes and locale. Obviously, there might be something to the idea of popping up small and unobtrusive alerts for nearby businesses -- maybe even ones you didn't known existed. But, when you're trying to navigate a busy roundabout or a confusing set of on-ramps (we're looking at you, New Jersey), perhaps it's best not to crowd your vision with popups for Mabel's MuumuuMart.

Norway: World's First LNG Powered Cargo Ship ... - LNG World News

World's First LNG Powered Cargo Ship Launched

The ship was called ?a world sensation? when it entered into service recently. Why? It is the world?s first natural gas-powered cargo ship!

The ship naming ceremony of MS ?H?ydal? took place at the BioMar quay at in Vester?len in Nordland county, Northern Norway.

?You have today received a worldwide sensation to your village,? said the godmother Erna Solberg, who is leader of the conservative party in Norway. ?MS ?H?ydal? manifests the desire to do something new and to be in front. Local capital and local forces behind have dared to take new steps.?

Reduces emissions dramatically

MS ?H?ydal? runs on liquefied natural gas, known as LNG, reducing emissions of greenhouse gases such as nitrogen oxides and CO2 significantly. The freighter will carry commercial fish feedstock from the BioMar factory at Myre in Vester?len to fish farms along the Norwegian coast.

MS ?H?ydal? has already been operating along the coast for a month. The newbuilding cost was about NOK 200 million.

About the ship

The ship is owned by the company NSK Shipping AS, who is a key transport partner of BioMar. BioMar started a cooperation with ship designer NSK Design Ltd three years ago. The goal was to develop a new and environmentally friendly ship design for transportation of fish feedstock. Apparently they have succeeded.

The approximately 70 meters long and 16 meters wide ship was built by the Turkish shipyard Tersan in Istanbul. It is classified by the Norwegian Veritas, DNV.

MS ?H?ydal has a capacity of 2,000 tonnes of bulk cargo. On board there is a crane with 50 ton lifting capacity.

The LNG fuel tank is approximately 90 cubic meters ? sufficient for one week?s operation. Rolls Royce has provided LNG engines and the ship propulsion system. The ship?s speed is 14 knots.

The new ship represents 90 percent reduction in NOx emissions and 25 percent reduction in CO2 compared to conventional diesel.

?The Norwegian coast is vulnerable. Natural gas powered cargo ships reduce emissions of greenhouse gases significantly and show the way forward for both transport and aquaculture. In addition it eliminates the risk of contamination from heavy fuel oil by accident. The whole concept of larger vessels, better maneuverability and gas fuel is an important contribution from BioMar to the develop aquaculture in the right direction with a prime focus on sustainability,? says sales director Per Kristian Nordoy, BioMar.

Dark Souls PC Review - Free video game downloads, news ...

By Jeff Buckland, 8/29/2012

Gamers need to be careful what they wish for. In the last year, the PC gaming community has been asking Namco to put together a PC port of Dark Souls, the intensely difficult medieval action-RPG by Japanese developer From Software. Earlier this year, those gamers got their wish after an online petition got Namco's attention. But now that the port is complete and in the hands of gamers, many who committed to buying this port have either read the horror stories in recent previews or are finding out first hand: From Software doesn't really know how to make PC games, and while they got the offline and online play working fine in this port of Dark Souls, there's just not much here to make a PC gamer happy.

The game itself already has a pretty notorious reputation. It's a medieval action-RPG with some brutal combat and a lot of tricky situations and gotcha-type moments that will kill you often, and kill you hard. (After all, this is the "Prepare to Die" version of Dark Souls, although that subtitle has been attached mostly because of a new section of the game that's particularly tough.) Characters you build can specialize in heavy or light armor, fast or slow attacks, melee or ranged abilities, swords or spells, and eventually you'll probably build a character with a hybrid of these abilities in order to deal with a range of combat situations. There are no set character classes, although there are some basic archetypes you can choose from when you create your character that pre-assign things in particular ways. And yes, some builds work much better than others, including those you can choose from at the start.

Each of the game's levels is generally set up in a way that teaches you how to win by killing you repeatedly. Not only will you be forced to learn how to attack and defend efficiently, but you'll also have to learn enemy attack patterns as well as how to manage your quickly-regenerating stamina (which you need to defend, attack, run, and dodge). And the way you learn it is by dying and re-trying the level repeatedly. All of this comes without much in the way of a danger-free tutorial, as the first level - the easiest one by far - will kill players multiple times if they're not careful. And if they're new to the Souls games? It's almost guaranteed they're going to die, even if they've heard the warnings from their friends.

Of course, PC gamers are not new to difficult games. Some of the toughest games you can play are exclusively on on PC, from obscure shmups to ridiculously hard platformers like I Wanna Be the Guy and its fan-made spinoffs. But the difference with many of the toughest PC-only games is that little progress is lost in them when you do die; through repetition and muscle memory, players can power through difficult chunks of a game, sometimes with a bit of luck, and they may not have to truly master every single little situation. But in Dark Souls, death not only sets you back quite a ways, it also actually kind of makes it worse if you've been dying repeatedly, because death causes you to go into an undead form which has significant disadvantages over human form. The developers have played with the difficulty a bit by adding new systems into this game over the predecessor, Demon's Souls, like the added advantages and disadvantages of being either undead or human. In practice, though, these features wind up making the game more complicated, rather than making it easier.

Let me stop here for a second and just be clear here. I think Dark Souls is a fantastic game with plenty of elements that the rest of the industry should take lessons from - particularly the idea that today's gamers don't need to constantly be babied like nearly everything out there currently does - but Dark Souls, with its unforgiving difficulty and unflinching adherence to gotcha-games and one-hit kills, well, it's just not for me. Its intense difficulty combined with the loss of progress and frustration that comes with dying can only be handled emotionally by a certain type of very patient gamer, and unfortunately, I'm not one of them. I will admit here that for the sake of my health and for the welfare of small, breakable objects that were within arm's reach, I did not spend too terribly long playing Dark Souls on PC. I did spend enough time to know that this is the same game it was on consoles, but this time with some high-end new content and an iffy technical foundation that many PC gamers will not like.

So what's the problem with the port? Well, technically, it does not make use of a single advantage that the PC offers as a high-end gaming platform. The game's available on Steam, sure, but it also relies on the much-reviled Games for Windows Live. Those who have played iffy PC ports in the past probably don't need an introduction to the issues with GFWL, but highlights include save corruption, Live profile and product key issues, and when combined with Steam, two account sign-ins just to get into a single player session. Playing Dark Souls with a keyboard and mouse is pretty much an exercise in pain (beyond the one that the game itself is), as the key bindings are very strange, the mouse cursor stays on-screen when you're using it to move your character, the settings are difficult to configure, and the on-screen prompts for the many bindings you'll need only ever show Xbox 360 controller buttons. There's more: the game runs at a maximum of 30fps no matter how fast your PC is, and it renders at a lousy internal resolution of 1024x720 and then stretches the image (while adjusting properly for aspect ratio) to whatever screen resolution you have, so the game winds up looking even more like a console port than other bad ports. An industrious user has already come up with a hack-fix for the screen-resolution and mouse cursor issues, but the rest of the problems remain and may have to either have to be fixed by From Software, or not get fixed at all.

All of these technical issues might not be a big deal for some gamers, but Dark Souls is already a frustrating game, and the annoyance of having to deal with a shoddy port like this might be enough to put off even those players who might have been able to endure the deaths and tough-love learning experiences that Dark Souls imposes. And the new content in this edition of the game - which will get put onto consoles as DLC soon for $15 - is even tougher, as you'll get access to new gear, but the levels and bosses that have been added are quite tough. Is it worth it if you absolutely loved either of the Souls games in the past, have a half-decent gaming PC, and don't mind playing it mostly the same way you played the console original? Yes it is, but don't expect to be impressed with From Software's meager efforts to make PC gamers happy. I suppose one upside is that the price tag is set at a mostly-reasonable $40, but if you buy the game and wind up not enjoying it due to either the difficulty or the technical issues, then it seems like a waste at any price.

Despite all the negative things I have to say about my personal Dark Souls experience - both on PC and on consoles earlier this year - there is a way to find plenty of satisfaction in this iffy port of a very good game, but you're going to need to be part of a pretty narrow audience to see it. First: you'll need to be mostly OK with a port that's barebones and about as functional as the console versions themselves. Next: you'll probably want to be the kind of ultra-patient gamer that enjoys persevering through frustration and anger to finally achieve victory. And finally, to really get a lot out of this game, you'll probably want to enjoy a bit of PvP, as the game's sinister, trollish online modes are generally centered around players trying to ruin some stranger's solo experience by way of world invasion - and when combined with multiple playthroughs with different character builds and such, that's where the lasting depth in Dark Souls really lies.

It's unfortunate that I have to attach so many caveats and if-thens in order to recommend Dark Souls on PC, but those that meet the requirements (and I'm not talking about computer specs) will find this one of the deepest and most enjoyable games they've played in quite a few years. If you think you've got what it takes to find fun in this difficult but brilliant game, go for it. I said in my review of the console versions that many game design lessons can be taken from Dark Souls - both cautionary tales and big success stories - and the PC port brings a new one, which is that you really should know your audience better than this before you go and perform in front of them. It seems doubtful that this port of an already inhospitable game will make many new fans, especially with the kind of treatment it got in the conversion to PC, but there will be some that will swear by it as one of the best games made in a very long time. If you think there's any chance at all that you'll be one of those people, then you owe it to yourself to drop the cash and find out.

European equities tumble as US stimulus prospects dim

European stocks tumbled Thursday on downbeat eurozone business and consumer confidence and as expectations dimmed that US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke would signal fresh economic stimulus.

London's FTSE 100 index dropped 0.42 percent to 5,719.45 points, in Paris the CAC 40 lost 1.02 percent to 3,379.11 points and Frankfurt's DAX 30 tumbled 1.64 percent to 6,895.49 points.

Madrid stocks retreated 1.52 percent as Spain's long-term borrowing costs rose further, while Milan dropped 1.09 percent in value despite another successful Italian bond auction.

The European single currency slid to $1.2502, compared with $1.2526 late in New York on Wednesday.

The dollar slid to 78.54 yen from 78.70 yen late on Wednesday.

A sharp drop in eurozone business and consumer confidence, down by 1.8 points from July to 86.1 points in a fifth consecutive monthly slide, undermined market sentiment.

And unemployment in Germany rose for the fifth month in a row in August in a further sign that Europe's recent growth engine is losing steam.

The DAX also took a hit after shares in automakers fell sharply following analyst notes suggesting the sector was in for a rough ride due to slowing global growth, with Daimler shares dropping 5.53 percent, BMW 4.75 percent and Volkswagen 3.97 percent.

Attention has for days focused on a meeting of central bankers at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where Bernanke is due to give a speech on Friday, and whether he will signal another round of monetary easing to kickstart the US economy.

However a slew of data in recent days suggesting a slow if steady US recovery has been interpreted by investors as a sign Bernanke would hold off on further stimulus.

"Wednesday's round of positive economic and housing data has dampened the outlook that an additional round of monetary easing will be unveiled in Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's Friday address," said Karee Venema at Schaeffer's Investment Research.

US consumer spending rebounded in July after holding flat in June, official data showed Thursday, a crucial improvement for boosting growth in the sluggish economy.

The US Commerce Department reported consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of the nation's economic activity, rose 0.4 percent in July, the strongest gain since February.

"Given the patchiness of US data and the elevated oil price it would seem unlikely that Ben Bernanke will announce a new raft of easing measures in his speech tomorrow especially ahead of next week's jobs report and ISM data," said CMC Markets analyst Michael Hewson.

US stocks were down in midday trading, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling 0.75 percent to 13,009.03 points, the S&P 500-stock index sliding 0.71 percent to 1,400.41 points, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq sheding 0.89 percent to 3,053.66 points.

Markets have been on edge for weeks over whether the Fed chairman will act on the sluggish economy.

Bernanke used the Jackson Hole venue the past two years to let markets and policymakers know what is on his mind. In 2010, he moved the markets with his signal of "QE2" -- a second $600 billion quantitative easing programme aimed at pushing down long-term interest rates.

Meanwhile, European Central Bank head Mario Draghi has added to expectations he would resume a controversial sovereign bond-buying scheme.

Writing in the German weekly Die Zeit, he said the ECB would always act within its mandate and ensure price stability, but that it might have to resort to exceptional measures.

Asian markets fell on Thursday, with Hong Kong dropping 1.19 percent, Tokyo falling 0.95 percent, Seoul losing 1.15 percent and Sydney off 0.94 percent.

Familiar music could help people with brain damage

Listening to a favourite song might boost the brain's ability to respond to other stimuli in people with disorders of consciousness.

Music has been shown to have a beneficial influence on cognitive process in healthy people and those who have brain damage. For example, daily music therapy can help to enhance cognitive recovery after a stroke.

Fabien Perrin at the University of Lyon, France, and colleagues recorded brain activity in four patients ? two in a coma, one in a minimally conscious state, and one in a vegetative state ? while they were read a list of people's names, including the subject's own name. The list was preceded either by the subject's favourite music ? chosen by family and friends ? or by "musical noise". One patient listened to The Eagles' Hotel California, another was played the Blues Brothers' Everybody Needs Somebody to Love. The team then repeated the experiment with ten healthy volunteers.

In all four patients, playing the music rather than musical noise enhanced the quality of the brain's subsequent response to their own name, bringing it closer to the brain response of the ten healthy volunteers to hearing their own name, whether or not it was preceded by music or musical noise. The work was presented at the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness meeting in Brighton, UK, last month.

Consciousness increase

Perrin has two theories about what's going on. "Listening to preferred music activates our autobiographical memory ? so it could make it easier for the subsequent perception of another autobiographical stimulus such as your name," he says. "Another hypothesis is that music enhances arousal or awareness, so maybe it temporarily increases consciousness and the discrimination of your name becomes easier."

"The familiar music might be causing an emotional arousal effect, and once [the patient with brain damage is] aroused, there is a small window that opens for increased communication and the brain responds to the name," suggests Carsten Finke, a neurologist at Charit? Medical School in Berlin, Germany, who was not involved in the study.

So is Perrin's music sparking some form of consciousness in the people with brain damage? "I've not come across any responses like this to music before and it's way too early to conclude that it has any therapeutic effects in these patients," says Adrian Owen at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada.

Perrin agrees that it's very early days. "We're showing that we can boost cerebral activity to obtain responses that are very similar to those obtained from healthy participants. It's in favour of enhancement of self-consciousness but we can't be sure."

But he says that confirming the results with more people could have direct implications on the sensory environment of patients in intensive care.

How to get on page 1 of Google | Learn How To ... - Online Business

To have a successful online business and make sales, you will need customers to come to your website or blog and in order to achieve this you must have a good marketing idea to generate the traffic. With the internet full of textual information you need something that stands out.
So what catches people?s eye? What to do to attract a certain customer and how to present your content in a way that will have customers flocking to your site. Videos, OK this is not new and there are videos all over the web but when people search for something online, they are expecting the search results to show text headers, one on top of the other.

It?s the normal way of promoting a business online. Online or offline, businesses depend on good marketing. A good campaign can make all the difference to a new business.

If you are presented with a video clip after you type in your search words to the search engines, your eyes are drawn to the stills picture that is inviting you to click on it to see the video. We are often intrigued by the video and prefer to see a video clip for what we are looking for rather than read a headline.

After clicking on that clip, you are immediately taken to the marketing video. The company has created to deliver visitors to a website or page on the internet. You will then spend some time watching that video normally they are short, from 2 to 10 minuets.

Below the video is a well placed link to the company?s website, page or blog that invites you to go for more information, free gift or eBook. The main object of the video was to get the potential customer to this final destination and hopefully their website is designed well enough to convert the visitor into a sale.

Video marketing is big business with some major companies charging thousands of dollars an hour to produce a marketing video for the websites specific niche. But with many online video programs now available to everyone who has an internet connection, it?s possible for anyone to make and produce their own videos and upload them to web hosting companies like YouTube.

If you do try video marketing, it is very powerful and converts traffic into sales extremely well, also providing something very different from text style adverts, the smaller online businesses are now taking advantage of this and generating larger amounts of traffic to their websites.

The internet is full of textual headlines in the search results, maybe its time to try something a little different. Video marketing has been here for a while now but still many small businesses have not tried it, have a try, you may be surprised at the results.

Can Twitter tell if you?re a psychopath?

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Some two dozen topless women protested in a New York City park on a hot, sweaty Sunday as part of what they called "National Go-Topless Day" to draw attention to inequality in topless rights between men and women. There were topless men in the park, too, but nobody paid them much attention, a disparity, organizers said, that demonstrated the need for the event. The topless women drew crowds of onlookers who took pictures and video with their cell phones. ...

Romania parliament clears president's return to office

BUCHAREST (Reuters) - Romania's parliament accepted on Monday a court ruling to return the country's suspended president to office, drawing a line under a political row that has brought international criticism and punishment from financial markets.

The country's ruling leftist alliance, led by Prime Minister Victor Ponta, had fought a long and often bitter campaign to oust its main political opponent, rightist President Traian Basescu, provoking condemnation from Brussels and Washington.

Parliament voted to suspend Basescu last month and an overwhelming majority of voters chose to impeach him in a referendum.

But Romania's Constitutional Court last week struck down the referendum because turnout was less than the required half the electorate.

Parliamentary speaker Valeriu Zgonea told reporters on Monday the leftist-dominated lower house recognized the ruling. "We cannot interfere (with), block or ... alter Constitutional Court decisions," he said.

The end of the political battle over Basescu's immediate political future will please international critics, who had accused the government of failing to respect the rule of law during its campaign.

But it sets the stage for a power struggle between the still bitterly opposed rightist president and leftist government in the countdown to a parliamentary election later this year.

POWER STRUGGLE

Once Basescu, a bluff former oil tanker captain, returns to office he will reclaim his ability to delay, but not block, legislation.

The president also has the job of appointing prime ministers after an election. That could put him in a powerful position if Ponta's Social Liberal Union (USL) fails to win an outright parliamentary majority.

Basescu has been in office since 2004 and is unpopular because of his association with austerity measures, including salary cuts and raising sales tax, and perceptions of cronyism.

Ponta's government has lost some support over its failed attempt to remove Basescu, polls have shown. But it is still on course to win the vote.

The court's ruling must now be published in Romania's official record before Basescu can return to office, possibly as soon as Monday evening.

During the political struggle, the government had threatened to remove Constitutional Court judges or limit its powers, before backing down under pressure from Brussels.

Analysts said the battle reflected a broader struggle for power and control of the judicial system in a country where corruption is rampant and 19 members of parliament from Ponta's alliance are under investigation.

The leu currency has recovered some ground from all-time lows hit during the failed impeachment process, but is still weaker than its regional peers.

The widespread international criticism also raised doubts over Romania's 5 billion euro ($6.26 billion)International Monetary Fund-led aid deal.

FastestGrowingCountrieIt's no secret that mobile analytics firm Flurry gets a kick out of tracking apps and mobile device adoption trends, and today it released some new data on iOS and Android device adoption around the globe. The United States still leads in the number of active iOS and Android devices with 165 million, with China coming in just behind it with 128 million net active smart devices. From there, the numbers just sort of drop off ? the UK finishes in third with 31 million active devices, while South Korea and Japan round out the top five with 28 and 22 million respectively.

How To Get Started In Commercial Real Estate : simsadler.net

Getting involved in commercial real estate can overwhelm and stress out beginners and veterans alike. Read this article to find out how you can approach a transaction efficiently, and stay in control of the situation with less stress.

If you plan on investing in commercial real estate, you should consider the tax benefits you will receive. Not only are there interest deductions, but also depreciation benefits to be aware of. There is a chance that an investor may receive money that must be taxed, but does not come in the form of cash; this is known as phantom income. You should be mindful of phantom income prior to investing.

It is important to be aware of all of the environmental issues and obligations related to your property. For example, hazardous waste materials are a major red flag for any property. It?s up to you to be aware of the issues, fix them, and have them inspected once complete.

Create a reputation of being an expert by starting a blog on your website. This assists in locating people to buy or lease your property.

When searching for a real estate agent, keep their disclosures in mind so you know who they are working for. Dual agency is a possibility that you need to be aware of. When dual agency exists, the agency advocates for both parties in the transaction. This means the agency works for the tenant and the landlord at the same time. If this is the case, and the agent is a dual agent, this should be known to both parties and agreed to by both parties.

When choosing between two similar commercial properties, think large scale. Acquiring enough money to finance a 10 or 20 unit apartment complex can be huge undertaking. Also, purchasing more units is like buying in bulk. The more you buy, the cheaper each unit will be.

Don?t ever underestimate the value of the relation between you and lenders, be them private or investors. Many commercial properties are bought and sold without ever going on the open market. Having many people in your address book increases the chance that you are exposed to such deals.

You may wish to focus your efforts on only one property type at a time. Regardless of whether your real estate investment is a office, apartment complex, or undeveloped commercial land, it is important to concentrate your efforts on only one investment. Each type deserves and requires undivided attention. Becoming a guru in one investment category is preferable to minimal success spread across multiple investments.

Looking for that perfect piece of commercial property can seem like an endless journey, with much to learn for even the most experienced buyers. In this article, you will find plenty of tips and tricks to give you an enjoyable and easy search for the commercial property you need.

Sim Sadler is a real estate expert and has been buying and selling commercial real estate for over 25 years, through every market you can imagine.

Prosecutors: Aurora suspect made threat in March

DENVER (AP) ? The man accused of opening fire on an Aurora movie theater told a classmate he wanted to kill people four months before the shooting, newly released court records allege.

Prosecutors made the allegation in a motion released Friday seeking access to James Holmes' records from the University of Colorado Denver's neuroscience graduate program.

Holmes "had conversations with a classmate about wanting to kill people in March 2012, and that he would do so when his life was over," attorneys for the state wrote. The student wasn't identified.

That alleged conversation would have occurred at roughly the same time that police have said Holmes began receiving "a high volume of deliveries" at his home and at the university. Police haven't said what those packages contained, but they said he ordered thousands of rounds of ammunition on the Internet.

The prosecution's allegation is the earliest report of a possible threat from Holmes, who was an enigma to many before authorities said he opened fire on a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" on July 20. Twelve people were killed and 58 were wounded.

Prosecutors allege Holmes also made unspecified threats to a professor in June, the same month in which they say he failed his year-end final. University officials say he left the program after the exam.

Holmes' attorneys argue that prosecutors should have no access to his student records. It's not clear whether Holmes' attorneys filed a response to the prosecution's allegations. Most filings in the case are sealed and none of the defense filings released Friday by the judge address the alleged threats.

The prosecution motion was filed last week but not released by the judge until Friday, a day after a court hearing in which prosecutors first asserted that Holmes had made threats. They didn't disclose any details about the threats then but did say that professors had sought to keep Holmes out of their labs and that "professors urged that he find another line of business."

A spokeswoman from the University of Colorado declined comment. Prosecutors and defense attorneys didn't return calls seeking comment.

Holmes' defense lawyer, Daniel King, has said Holmes is mentally ill and was seeing a psychiatrist at the university, setting up a possible insanity defense.

However, prosecutors are suggesting that Holmes was motivated by his anger that he was failing at school.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Karen Pearson told the judge Thursday that prosecutors need access to school records to establish motive by showing what Holmes hoped to accomplish at CU and the "dissatisfaction with what occurred in his life that led to this."

They also want to see records from campus police and a campus threat evaluation team similar to those established across the country after the 2007 Virginia Tech University shootings.

Prosecutors say they need the university documents to gain access to a notebook reportedly containing violent descriptions of an attack. The notebook was in a package Holmes sent to university psychiatrist Lynne Fenton.

She is expected to testify at an Aug. 30 hearing.
