Calif. Dem Says Ryan Lies Like Nazi's Goebbels

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -The chairman of the California delegation to the Democrats' convention was criticized by both parties for comparing Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan to the Nazi propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels.

In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle on Saturday, John Burton said, "They lie and they don't care if people think they lie. Joseph Goebbels . It's the big lie, you keep repeating it." Goebbels was the minister of propaganda during Hitler's Nazi regime.

Burton was referring specifically to Ryan, whose speech at the Republican convention in Tampa last week has been criticized by Democrats for inaccuracies.

"How can a senior citizen believe him when he says I'm going to save your Medicare or that my budget balances," said Burton reacting to Ryan's remarks.

Burton expanded on his comments with ABC Affiliate KGO, saying, "If you're not telling the truth, you're lying. Joseph Goebbels' concept was the big lie. If you tell it enough, people will think it's the truth."

President Obama's campaign rejected Burton's comments just hours before their convention kicked off.

"That obviously doesn't reflect the views of the campaign," said Obama for America National Press Secretary Ben LaBolt. "That doesn't have any place in the political discourse here in Charlotte."

The Republican Jewish Coalition also condemned Burton's remarks. "John Burton ought to know better than to bring the Nazis and their victims into our current political debates, but apparently the offense such remarks cause to Holocaust survivors and their families are of less concern to him than the prospect of partisan gain," the coalition said.

Burton's comments come one day after two California delegates were involved in a drunken incident at their Charlotte hotel. The police were called to the Blake Hotel and one of the delegates ended up in the hospital. The other delegate was sent home.

Downsizing Your SUV for the Sake of Environment - Automotive News

The SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) is a somewhat of modern day paradox. While consumers are facing increasing cost of petrol, the demand for SUVs, otherwise known as gas-guzzlers, is equally growing. Because SUVs consume far more petrol then other cars, and because they emit too much harmful gas, environmentalists are lobbying for consumers to downsize from their SUV for the good of the environment, at least.

Unexpectedly, the green movement found ally in car manufacturers and it happened few years ago when the concept of a crossover first hit the salons. Today, the weird amalgamation between an off-roader and a city car accounts for over 10% of new car sales worldwide. So, what prompted this change?

Paris wants us to go green

The revolution has been brewing for quite some time but it?s only recently that the whole ?downsizing? vibe has received a more official character. The concern about the effects of too many SUVs on the road was recently put to the fore when news was released that the city of Paris was considering putting heavy taxes and possibly even completely banning SUVs from central Paris streets.

The mayor of Paris is considering implementing this move due to the high pollution contributed by the 4x4s, primarily the old-school diesel engines that cough up soot and other heavy particles wherever they go. This move has gained ground because other cities are also considering implementing a similar heavy tax for SUVs. Other cities in France are considering following the move should Paris go ahead, and so are cities elsewhere such as Singapore, London and Berlin.

So, should you really give up on your favourite off-roader and opt for a smaller car? For many people SUVs make a lot of sense, so don?t succumb to the pressure of the lobbyists and tree-huggers just for change?s sake, however, there are many benefits of downsizing your car.

Pros of downsizing

You may have got the hint from the title ? it?s the environment. Large cars do burn more fuel and emit more harmful gases. In order to meet the government?s 2020 target of CO2 cuts, we all need to contribute. Choosing a car that emits less harmful gases is a great way to do your bit for the environment.

Safety ? big cars are more difficult to handle. You?re in charge of more than two tons of metal propelled by a 200bhp-strong power plant. One wrong move and a disaster could be lurking around the corner. Besides, SUVs usually have wider blind spots requiring a higher level of concentration from the driver.

Fuel consumption ? by switching from a full-size 4?4 to a crossover, you can expect to save more than $1000 a year at the fuel station. If we?re comparing cars with petrol engines, most SUVs will struggle to reach 20mpg. Some crossovers, however, can achieve over 30mpg.

Money ? crossovers are cheaper to buy and cheaper to maintain. Even the best SUV breaks down sooner or later ? in a situation like this a big garage bill is inevitable.

Parking and manoeuvring ? finding a spot where your truck can fit in is sometimes very difficult. To add insult to injury, some multi-storey car parks have accidentally (or maybe on purpose) introduced height restrictions meaning that your car is literally banned from getting in.

The main cons of driving a small car

There are two sides to every coin. Although downsizing is a sensible thing to do, if you?ve driven 4x4s for a long time, the first thing you notice with a crossover is that there?s simply not enough space and comfort. Most full-size SUVs can seat 7 adults and tow a 3.5-ton trailer ? something that you?re unlikely to accomplish with a crossover.

You suddenly cannot go where the big guys go. Although the crossovers are often advertised as all-wheel drive vehicles, all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive is not the same thing. SUVs are built to perform on rugged terrains while crossovers are mainly city cars that are designed to look cool. A large 4?4 performs confidently on all surfaces, including wet tarmac. It will never lose control the way front-wheel or rear-wheel drive vehicles would.

Safety ? yes, although safety was previously mentioned as an issue with large cars, it?s proven that SUVs are safer especially in serious crashes. Smaller and lighter cars won?t be able to protect the passengers the way 4x4s can.

Versatility ? smaller cars are not as flexible as SUVs and if we?re looking at a large family you may end up owning two smaller cars, which will actually be more expensive in the long run.

It will be down to everyone?s preferences eventually, however, the current trend seems to be in favour of a more compact crossover. The real question is whether owning a large car is an actual necessity or merely a way to boost the driver?s ego?

Screenplay Form & Structure: The work of writing

I knew that somewhere or other I spoke of the need to dawdle over a sentence
and take time to hear just the right word. It was on Authonomy.com 12/8/11

Speaking now mostly to new authors, and based on my little experience of investing much in an uncertain result, it seems to me that writing fiction requires the following:

1. Leisure

I have been personally unable to write without food, drink, music appropriate to the task, and above all solitude. The ability to dawdle over a line and feel out precisely the right word takes time. Perhaps genius enjoys an exception, no effort or reflection required. But for most of us, writing is a trial by ordeal. My best work is always done in the mornings. That's not to say nights are empty and unproductive. Darkness is a cloak of peace when the world is quietly removed. This is especially helpful if you have children. But I do not understand how one can write a novel while working 9 to 5. It's not important to be prosperous, but unemployment is rocket fuel.

2. Love

The emotional support of a spouse or a very special personal friend who loves you is another basic requirement. The work of writing is lonely and tiring. Someone dear has to be there to pick up the pieces of your frazzled personality, put the beast to sleep and wipe away tears of joy or pain, as the case may be. An angry, resentful partner is hell on wheels.

3. Locomotion

... fire in the belly, a great engine of purpose (other than scribbling) to propel the work. It has to be about something that must be said, must be shown, must be proved beyond shadow of doubt with the warlike armaments and magic of story. At the beginning or twilight of an author's career the joy of writing is sufficient. Nothing wrong with that. I've done it. I'm doing it now -- rattling on with pleasure. It ain't fiction. Certainly isn't a story. Just goes to show how little fire is left in my breast, that I'm content to tap the keys and hear the sound of my own voice. If you are engaged in the work of a novel, there is no time for or purpose in scribbling. Every ounce of strength belongs to the marriage of brain and heart and guts to character and theme. If you're doing it right, the sun rises and sets without notice.

Stanford researchers make heart implant powered by radio waves, put batteries out of a job

Batteries used to be the only way to power implantable gadgets, but additional surgeries are needed to replace the power packs once their juice runs out -- a less-than-ideal solution for patients. Recent discoveries, however, have such medgadgets being powered by photons, hip hop and now high-frequency radio waves. Electrical engineers at Stanford built a cardiac device that uses a combination of inductive and radiative transmission of power, at about 1.7 billion cycles per second, to its coiled receiving antenna.

Previous prevailing opinion held that the high frequencies needed for wireless power delivery couldn't penetrate the human body deep enough, and the lower frequencies that would do the trick require antennas too large to work as implants. That conundrum was solved by getting the high-frequency signals to penetrate deeper using alternating waves of electric and magnetic fields. That allowed a 10x increase in power delivery -- up to 50 microwatts to a millimeter radius antenna coil -- to an implant five centimeters below the skin. That antenna also was also designed to pull power regardless of its orientation, making it ideal for applications inside always-moving human bodies. Of course, the implant's really just a proof-of-concept at this stage, but hopefully it won't be long before battery powered implants go the way of the dodo TouchPad.

Holmgren hopes to finish contract with Browns

BEREA, Ohio (AP) ? Browns President Mike Holmgren hopes to finish his contract with a Cleveland franchise in the midst of an ownership change.

Holmgren says Monday that he has "never quit anything in my life" and that he intends to complete his five-year contract which expires after the 2014 season. Jimmy Haslam III bought the Browns for $1 billion last month from Randy Lerner, who hired Holmgren in 2010. Haslam's purchase is pending the approval of the other NFL's owners and is expected to be completed by mid-October.

Holmgren has had positive interactions with Haslam, whom he calls a "good man." Holmgren doesn't feel the ownership switch has been disruptive as the Browns prepare for the upcoming season.

Holmgren wouldn't address the possibility of his role changing when Haslam takes over, saying "let's see how it goes."
