This is a hard question to answer but it needs to be thought through.
I do not intend to downplay the word abuse or the experiences of anyone who has been abused; abuse is horrible. Nor do I intend to call people bad parents just because they don't eat healthy and exercise. I used to work for social services. I know what bad parents are like.
But on the other hand, growing up in a household that has little or no health/ fitness conscience is what is making America so unhealthy. This reality is horrible. Lets go forward with trying to answer this question.
Have you seen Georgia's commercials about aiming to stop childhood obesity? Take a look. You might want to watch them all.
These commercials are using the same tactic as the drug and drunk driving scared straight theme that was out several years ago. It turns out that this strategy is NOT very effective in trying to get the desired results, but it does get the message out loudly.
Childhood obesity is a big problem. These commercials highlight the point that obese children tend to come from obese households. Is this a case of nature (genetics) or nurture (environment)? In reality, a bit of both but most kids are obese and unhealthy because of the environment they grow up.
The food children eat and the level of activity they get are the biggest contributes to how healthy they will be. If mom and dad eat chicken, potatoes, and pizza every night as they watch T.V. for 4 hours the children will likely follow suit. That is human nature.
The lifestyle choices of parents matter and affect the lifestyle choices of other people.
Yes, your lifestyle choices affect you, BUT it also affects other people. Are you fully aware of this reality? The kinds of food kids grow up with can alter their health and body for their entire lives. The level of activity kids get when they are growing up forever alters their bodies. What kids grow up with matters greatly. Are you aware of this?
Don't change your lifestyle and get in shape just for you. There is more on the line than just your health. Your household is on the line. Be aware of this. No decisions in life just affect you as an individual. No one lives in a bubble. Your actions matter and have a ripple effect on everyone near.
How will this reality change the way you think about health and fitness?
