Bulletins Live ? DIY home improvement classes offered at RLC

Repair costs can be very expensive if you hire professionals for everything. Rend Lake College Community and Corporate Education is offering three home improvement courses to show students how to do the basics themselves and save money.

Weatherization will be held 9 am to 12 pm Saturday, February 11. Students will learn how to protect a home from both cold and hot weather. Participants will also learn small tricks that help reduce energy costs. Topics such as how to replace a door or window will be covered, as well as how to check for airflow and how to stop it.

Basic Carpentry will be held 9 am to 12 pm Saturday, March 31. Students will learn how to use hand tools, read a tape measure and understand how to use a level. The instructor will show how to repair framing around windows and doors and how to check for rotten wood and more. Students will use what they learn to complete a small in-class carpentry project. In addition to the registration fee, a $5 supply fee will be payable to the instructor at the beginning of class to cover project materials.

Basic Roofing will be held 9 am to 12 pm Saturday, April 28. Students will learn how to repair or replace a leaky roof. How to replace flashing and check for leaks by chimneys will also be covered. Participants will learn the difference between tearing off old roofing versus covering it, as well as gaining an understanding about residential building codes.

The registration fee is $15 per class session. The classes will be held at Rend Lake College in Room 103 of the Vocational Building with instructor Wayne Kulich.
