'GMA' host may take medical leave late next month

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? "Good Morning America" anchor Robin Roberts is planning to take a medical leave around the end of August for her bone marrow transplant.

But during her absence from the ABC morning show, she'll be getting a little help from her friends, she said Thursday.

Roberts listed Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer and Katie Couric among her "wonderful, wonderful friends at ABC News" who will be subbing for her. Others mentioned: talk-show host Kelly Ripa and panelists from the ABC talk show "The View."

Roberts announced last month that she has MDS, a blood and bone marrow disease once known as preleukemia.

On Thursday, she told reporters gathered for the Television Critics Association conference in Beverly Hills, Calif., that her leave would "most likely" start at the end of August or early September.

"It's fascinating-slash-scary how to prepare yourself for something like this," she said, appearing by satellite from ABC's studios in New York. And when asked how she's feeling, she replied, "I do go through moments of fatigue."

But citing the continuing resurgence of "Good Morning America" against its long-dominant NBC rival "Today," she brightened.

"The run that we've had has truly energized me," she said. "It's pretty good medicine, I gotta say, to be taking!"

In particular, ABC was crowing Thursday that, for the first time in 17 years, "GMA" had seized first place among total viewers (almost 4.6 million vs. 4.25 million for "Today") as well as tying "Today" for first place in the 25- to 54-year-old demographic, each with 1.74 million.

ABC News President Ben Sherwood was inspired to frame the victory in Olympic terms.

"For 852 straight (weekly) races, the 'Today' show won the gold medal, going back to 1995," he said. Then, several weeks ago, "GMA" snapped the "Today" winning streak, "and stood there alone for the first time in 16 years to get its own gold medal."

"And after 879 weeks running behind in younger viewers, 25-to-54," Sherwood went on, "GMA" is "standing there at the gold-medal podium, unbelievably in an actual statistical tie with the previous champs."

Meanwhile, Sherwood acknowledged a mistake ABC News made last week during coverage of the movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., that killed 12 people and injured dozens more.

ABC News Chief Investigative Correspondent Brian Ross speculated on the air about the political ties of the alleged gunman, James Holmes, erroneously identifying him as a member of the tea party.

"It was a mistake," Sherwood said. "We recognized it immediately. We owned it immediately. We corrected it immediately. We apologized for it."

Declaring, "That particular moment didn't live up to the standards and practices of ABC News," he said, "I take responsibility for it. The news division knows how displeased I am about it. And we will do everything we can to prevent it ever happening again."

Dust Off Your Tool Belt: Homeowners Decide It's Finally Time to ...

It?s been quite a while since homeowners have felt it?s worthwhile to put good money into their houses. Given years of declining home values, there has been little hope of getting one?s money back with major remodeling projects. A new report indicates that in the months ahead, however, owners will be picking up their hammers ? or at least hiring plenty of contractors and handymen ? in what?s expected to be a major growth period for remodeling.

The latest study from Harvard?s JointCenter for Housing Studies forecasts that double-digit growth in annual homeowner spending on remodeling by the first quarter of 2013:

?Home-improvement activity has been bouncing around the bottom of this cycle for almost three years now, waiting for the industry to get some traction,? says Kermit Baker, director of the Remodeling Futures Program at the JointCenter. ?Now, the combination of low financing costs, stronger consumer confidence, improving home sales and the perception that home prices have stabilized in most markets across the country are encouraging owners to start working on the list of home-improvement projects they have been putting off.?

The rise in remodeling would seem to parallel the recent increases in auto sales. Dealerships have benefitted from strong sales in March, February?and much of the year, and at least part of the reason more cars are being purchased is that relatively few cars were purchased in prior years. Early in 2012, it was reported that the average car on the road was over 11 years old, the highest figure ever. All of that delayed demand finally caught up with drivers this year, resulting in strong car sales. Similarly, homeowners appear to be deciding that it?s finally time to take on long-delayed remodeling projects. Helping the cause: by some account, it appears as if housing market has finally hit bottom, and values are set to rise.

It?s perfectly understandable why owners have been putting off home-improvement projects. Back in 2005, dropping serious money on renovations seemed like a no-brainer. Home-improvement projects yielded 87? of value for every $1 in cost, on average, and it wasn?t that difficult for smart DIYers and remodelers to choose projects that boosted home values more than what they spent out of pocket. My, how times have changed.

Seven years after hitting a peak in the cost-vs.-value ratio for home-improvement projects, Remodeling magazine estimated a little while back that homeowners could now expect to get a mere 58? or so of value for every $1 spent remodeling. The cost-vs.-value ratio has been dropping steadily since 2005, when it measured 87%, down to 61.5% last year and 57.7% lately.

The main reason for the decrease in the ratio is one that homeowners and contractors alike are powerless to counter: the overall drop in housing prices. Improvements and upgrades can only do so much when the overarching trend is home values that shrink. This is so even as the cost of remodeling is likely to have decreased because of?contractors being eager for work in recent years.

Owners who are struggling to sell their homes may be especially tempted to take on remodeling projects that they assume will give them an edge on unloading the property. But, as a Philadelphia Daily News story based largely on Remodeling magazine?s survey states, it?s unlikely that last-minute renovations make financial sense when preparing for a sale:

Doing the necessary improvements to a house will help it compete. If two houses are for sale on the same street for the same price and one has a new roof while the other needs one, it?s not hard to figure out which might sell first. But might is the operative word in an era when little about the real estate market is a certainty.

Instead of showy, high-end improvements ranging from restaurant-quality kitchen appliances to in-home theaters, homeowners have been more likely to care deeply about price and value when remodeling in recent years. That?s if they?ve done any remodeling at all, of course.

Obama urges tighter gun checks after Aurora massacre

President Barack Obama pauses as he talks about the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting as he addresses the National??In his broadest remarks on gun control yet in the aftermath of the mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater, President Barack Obama called late Wednesday for tougher background checks designed to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill.

"A lot of gun owners would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals -- that they belong on the battlefield of war, not on the streets of our cities," the president, who has called for reimposing the Assault Weapons Ban, said in a speech to the National Urban League.

"I believe the majority of gun owners would agree that we should do everything possible to prevent criminals and fugitives from purchasing weapons; that we should check someone's criminal record before they can check out a gun seller; that a mentally unbalanced individual should not be able to get his hands on a gun so easily," he said. "These steps shouldn't be controversial. They should be common sense."

But Obama also offered a nod to the difficult politics of gun control, portraying himself as a believer in the individual right to bear arms, and acknowledging that calls to action after an incident like the one in Aurora often fade.

"When there is an extraordinarily heartbreaking tragedy like the one we saw, there's always an outcry immediately after for action. And there's talk of new reforms, and there's talk of new legislation," Obama said in his speech. ?"And too often, those efforts are defeated by politics and by lobbying and eventually by the pull of our collective attention elsewhere."

"And I, like most Americans, believe that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual the right to bear arms.? And we recognize the traditions of gun ownership that passed on from generation to generation -? that hunting and shooting are part of a cherished national heritage," he said.

The president also singled out youth violence, and warned that government can only do so much. "It's up to us, as parents and as neighbors and as teachers and as mentors, to make sure our young people don't have that void inside them," he said.

(It's unclear how much political capital Obama will risk in an election-year gun-control fight. On the way to Aurora on Sunday, White House press secretary Jay Carney was asked whether there would be no renewed push for the assault weapons ban. "I wouldn't argue with your assessment about that," Carney replied. And White House officials have repeatedly emphasized that they are focused on enforcing "existing law.")

On a lighter note, Obama warned American school kids that they have to "hit the books" if they want to compete with their peers in rising economic powers -- and avoid temptations like TV's "Real Housewives."

"You're competing against young people in Beijing and Bangalore. They're not hanging out. They're not getting over.? They're not playing video games.? They're not watching 'Real Housewives.' ?I'm just saying: It's a two-way street.? You've got to earn success," he said.

"That wasn't in my prepared remarks," he said, to laughter from the crowd. "But I'm just saying."

Colorado Shooting Survivor Forgives Alleged Gunman

DENVER ? A survivor of the deadly shootings at a Colorado movie theater says he has forgiven the alleged gunman.

Denver Rescue Mission employee Pierce O'Farrill was shot three times, in the left arm and left leg, in the attack Friday at an Aurora theater showing the new Batman movie. He was released from the hospital Wednesday.

James Eagan Holmes is accused of launching the attack that killed 12 people and injured 58.

O'Farrill told The Denver Post ( ) that when he saw images of Holmes at his first court appearance Monday, he felt sorrow for him. http://bit.ly/NYVEBq

"Of course, I forgive him with all my heart. When I saw him in his hearing, I felt nothing but sorrow for him ? he's just a lost soul right now," O'Farrill said. "I want to see him sometime. The first thing I want to say to him is `I forgive you,' and the next is, `Can I pray for you?'"

Formal criminal charges haven't been filed against Holmes yet.

There has never been a much better time to be bilingual. Even though many jobs are being lost because of the economic decline, bilingual jobs continue to see an increase in positions. With the explosion in this service industry, there have been monetary rewards as well.

Growing Need

The need for bilingual employees reaches an all-time high. This is because today?s marketplace via the internet allows people from Germany to purchase from an American manufacturer. When this same German customer calls the customer service phone number, he has the right to interact in his native language. If there is not a customer service representative proficient in German, the customer will turn out to be frustrated. He will not only ever buy from this company. He will take the time to tell his friends and family of his unsatisfactory experience using the company. Many sales could be lost for this reason one phone call. It is the cost that business must pay in order to be a world presence.

Basic Economics

Economic theory states that after demand is high, supply is low. This is certainly the case with bilingual positions. There are simply a lot of unfulfilled positions due to the lack of qualified candidates. Suffice to say, if there is a shortage of bilingual workers, management will pay their own bilingual staff more in order to retain them. Otherwise, these same employees can go work for a competitor making a considerable amount more in salary compared to they did at their previous job. Salaries will become higher and an overall higher pay is obtained by all bilingual employees as a result of the demand.

Room for Advancement

By having bilingual employees on a business?s staff, a business shows they understand and will meet their customers? needs, no matter what vocabulary they speak. This in turn will result in higher sales when subsequent customers receive a referral by the very first customer. This makes a bilingual employee a revenue generator and will be noticed by management. Possible supervisory positions may open up in different department based on the ability to speak a second language with proficiency.

GOLIAD, Texas (AP) ? A pickup truck overloaded with passengers veered off a highway and crashed into trees in rural south Texas, killing at least 13 people and leaving 10 injured, authorities said.

Gerald Bryant, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, said the 23 passengers were crammed inside the truck?s cab and bed, including at least two young children whom he saw among the dead after the Sunday evening crash.

?This is the most people I?ve seen in any passenger vehicle, and I?ve been an officer for 38 years,? Bryant said, referring to the chaotic scene in Goliad County.

The white 2000 Ford F-250 pickup was heading north on U.S. 59 on Sunday evening when it drove off the right side of the highway near the unincorporated community of Berclair in Goliad County and struck two large trees, Bryant said. Berclair is about 100 miles southeast of San Antonio.

State troopers and Goliad County sheriff?s investigators were investigating what caused the single-vehicle crash. Border Patrol was assisting with the investigation.

?It?s unknown whether or not (the victims) were illegal, but it?s possible,? Bryant told the AP.

Authorities initially said 11 people had died. Early Monday, Department of Public Safety dispatcher Cynthia Duffield in San Antonio said another two had died at hospitals overnight.

Six of those who died were still inside the mangled vehicle truck when emergency crews arrived at the scene, Bryant said.

?It?s been very chaotic here, and it?s very traumatic,? Bryant told the San Antonio-Express News.

He told The Associated Press that several of the surviving victims had life-threatening injuries. He did not have their official conditions but described them as ?very serious.? The injured were taken to hospitals in San Antonio, Victoria and Corpus Christi.

"My butcher was unloading them and said, 'Oh, my gosh, boss, they sent us cooked dead?lobsters,'" said Sarro, owner of Fresh Catch Seafood in Mansfield, Mass. "He then picked one up and it crawled up his arm."

Reports of odd-colored?lobsters?used to be rare in the?lobster?fishing grounds of New England and Atlantic Canada. Normal lobsters?are a mottled greenish-brown.

But in recent years, accounts of bright blue, orange, yellow, calico, white and even split?lobsters?? one color on one side, another on the other ? have jumped. It's now common to hear several stories a month of a lobsterman bringing one of the quirky crustaceans to shore.

It's anybody's guess why more oddities are popping up in?lobster?traps, said Michael Tlusty, research director at the New England Aquarium in Boston.

It could be simply because advances in technology ? cellphone cameras and social media ? make it easier to spread the word about bizarre?lobster?sightings.

It's also likely more weird?lobsters?are being caught because the overall harvest has soared. In Maine, the catch has grown fourfold in the past 20 years, to nearly 105 million pounds last year. If the yield has quadrupled, it would make sense to have four times as many unconventional?lobsters?being caught as well.

Although?lobster?is the No. 1 commercial fishery in the Northeast, there are a lot of unanswered questions about the bottom-dwelling creatures, he said.

"Are we seeing more because the Twitter sphere is active and people get excited about colorful?lobsters?" Tlusty said. "Is it because we're actually seeing an upswing in them? Is it just that we're catching more?lobsters?so we have the opportunity to see more?

"Right now you can make a lot of explanations, but the actual data to find them out just isn't there."

Lobsters?come in a variety of colors because of genetic variations.

It's been written that the odds of catching a blue?lobster?are 1-in-2 million, while orange comes in at 1-in-10 million. Yellow and orange-and-black calico?lobsters?have been pegged at 1-in-30 million, split-colored varieties at 1-in-50 million, and white ? the rarest of all ? at 1-in-100 million.

But those are merely guesses, and nobody knows for sure.

What is known is that colored?lobsters?have shown up in greater frequency in certain areas over the years.

The waters off Cutler in eastern Maine were once a hotbed for blue ones, after 1,500 larvae-sized blue?lobsters?were released in 1990 to use as a tracking tool to determine their survival rates, said Bob Bayer, executive director of the University of Maine's?Lobster?Institute.

The waters off Montauk, N.Y., once had a lot of blue?lobsters?as well, he said, after researchers released large numbers of blue?lobsters?there. The bright-orange?lobsters?that were in Sarro's shipment are believed to have come from the same waters in Canada.

Aside from their color, the?lobsters?are apparently normal in all other ways, Bayer said. They all turn red when they're cooked, except for the white ones since they don't have any pigment, and diners wouldn't notice a difference.

"There's no difference in taste," he said.

Scientists say it's possible the?lobster?population as a whole has a greater percentage of misfits than it did in years past.

The off-colored?lobsters?are more susceptible to predators because they stick out more on the ocean bottom, rather than blending in like normal ones, said Diane Cowan, executive director of The?Lobster?Conservancy in Friendship, Maine.

"But with the predator population down, notably cod, there might be greater survival rates among these color morphs that are visually easier to pick out," she said.

Lobstermen have brought Cowan countless colorful?lobsters?over the years. The prettiest one, she said, was pink and purple.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) ? Muslims have begun fasting for the start of the Ramadan holy month in Indonesia, Malaysia and elsewhere around Asia, but the somber occasion was marred in Buddhist-dominated Thailand by two bomb blasts that killed one person and injured seven.

The Muhammadiyah group, Indonesia's second-largest Muslim organization, told its 30 million followers that Ramadan starts Friday. The government, however, declared the official start as Saturday, when most of the remaining 190 million Indonesians began the dawn-to-dusk fast.

Muslims in Thailand also began Ramadan on Friday, while Malaysians began Saturday. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh were to start Saturday or Sunday.

The Muslim holy month devoted to dawn-to-dusk fasting, prayers and good deeds culminates with the three-day holiday of Eid al-Fitr.

Muslims believe God revealed the first verses of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad during Ramadan, which starts with the sighting of the new moon. The Muslim lunar calendar moves back through the seasons, so Ramadan starts 11 days earlier each year under the Western calendar.

The holy month started ominously in southern Thailand, the region where most Thai Muslims live and where an insurgency has claimed thousands of lives. The car bombing started fires at shops and residences and sent black smoke wafting from a row of four-story buildings in a commercial area of Sungai Kolok in Narathiwat province.

In Bangladesh too, Ramadan is likely to start Saturday. However, a national moon sighting committee headed by state minister for religious affairs was to sit Friday evening to make an official declaration.

Parts of India, where about 13 percent of the 1.2 billion people are Muslim, started Saturday, including New Delhi and the Indian portion of Kashmir.

The largest Muslim rebel group in the predominantly Catholic Philippines said fasting there would begin Saturday.

A cease-fire has curtailed fighting and fostered peace talks between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in recent years. Rebel spokesman Von Al Haq said the guerrillas would observe Ramadan but still defend themselves if attacked.

The Philippine military traditionally orders troops to refrain from offensives that could disrupt Ramadan in the southern regions where minority Muslims live. Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda released a statement expressing solidarity with and goodwill toward Filipino Muslims in the holy month.
